Family members often take on\ndifferent roles because their loved one is struggling with addiction or is in a\nrecovery centre. Families need to recognize what has been lost due to the chaos\nof addiction\u2014like shared values and beliefs\u2014and figure out how to heal. They\nmight consider how family members have been affected, the well-being of\nsiblings, and the state of their relationships.<br><br><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Having a healthy family system\nis crucial for everyone\u2019s healing. Here are some common roles family members\nmight assume:<br><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><br><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><span style=\"\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">T<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">he Persecutor:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;This\n     person criticizes or blames the recovering individual, trying to\n     discipline or stop their behaviour.<\/span><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><br><ol style=\"margin-top:0cm\" start=\"1\" type=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size:normal;\">\n <\/span><\/ol><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The Rescuer:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;This\n     person fixes problems, makes excuses for the addict, and tries to smooth\n     over conflicts.<\/span><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><br><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The Victim:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;This\n     person often feels sorry for themselves, avoids taking responsibility, and\n     gives reasons for not changing their behaviour<\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><\/span>.<\/span><br><\/span><br><\/span><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Many families are not\nwell-informed about addiction-related issues like enabling, manipulation, and\nco-dependency. This lack of knowledge can be harmful. Supporters of recovering\naddicts also need to recognize how they\u2019ve changed and what they may have lost,\nmaking some self-reflection important to avoid behaviours that could hurt their\nloved one&#8217;s recovery, or keep them stuck in the addiction cycle.<br><br><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Family members involved in the\nrecovery process should consider some important questions to understand their\nroles better:<\/span><span style=\"font-size:normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><\/span><br><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><br><\/font><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Am I too involved in the chaos?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">How much time do I spend thinking about or talking about my loved one?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Have they become my sole purpose?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Am I ignoring the problem and just trying to carry on as usual?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Have I accepted chaos as my new normal?<br>Do I need crises to feel important?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Am I trying to manage or control my loved one\u2019s life?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Do I think that if I fix their problems, everything else will fall into place?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt; line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22.5px; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22.5px; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Other harmful behaviours can also negatively impact the family as a unit. If supporters act out of fear or expect the worst, it creates disconnection instead of connection, which only happens when driven by love and support.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22.5px; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Some supporters mistakenly believe that a loved one will be instantly cured after a short stay in a rehabilitation facility, not realizing that they might not be ready for recovery and still in denial. Believing in quick fixes can lead to disappointment.&nbsp; The fact is that the longer the recovering addict stays in treatment, the better the chances are for them to become sober in the long run.<br><br><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22.5px; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Supporters must acknowledge their own powerlessness over addiction, recognize the need for their own healing journey and embrace the recovery options available to them. It\u2019s common for supporters to feel traumatised and hopeless due to the addict\u2019s behaviour &#8211; and the emotional or financial effects it had on the family, but they must understand this experience is often beyond their control.<br><br><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 22.5px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 22.5px; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">There is hope, though.
