Meetings cover variety of topics and\nwill sometimes have a dedicated speaker for the evening. This is a chance for\nmembers in attendance to learn more about how addiction works as well as a\nforum to carry a message of hope to others.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">2) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Acceptance\nof a higher power<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">:<br>\nIt is important for an addict to turn their lives over to a Higher Power of\ntheir understanding. The 12 Step program is essentially a spiritual program and\nspiritual groups, prayer and meditation is at the core of treatment programs..\nThe definition of a Higher Power often varies from person to person, but AA and\nNA do not subscribe to, or endorse any religion or lack thereof. People of all\nbelief systems and faiths are welcome, no one will ever be turned away because\nof their beliefs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><font color=\"#000000\">3<\/font><strong style=\"\"><font color=\"#000000\">)&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Getting a sponsor or accountability partner<\/font><\/strong><\/span><strong style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">after treatment is\nvital. A sponsor acts as a guide for the journey through the 12 steps, as well\nas acting as a mentor and forms an important part of a recovering persons\nsupport structure. Some support groups refer to a wise council instead of a\nsponsor.&nbsp; They are also recovering\naddicts with many years of clean time. The benefits of one addict helping\nanother is so valuable because they ,fully believe and live by what they preach\nand they offer support from a place of mutual understanding.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">4) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The 12\nSteps<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">\nis a written spiritual program which deals with all aspects of addiction. Denial,\npowerlessness, unmanageability, coming to believe in a higher power, personal\ninventory, defects, amends, forgiveness, guilt, shame and trauma are only some\nof the issues covered. Written Step work is the core of the 12 steps program\nand clients are required to spend much of their lime on this crucial process.\nStep work is an opportunity to critically look at the behaviours, attitudes,\nand pre-conceived ideas that lead to a person seeking help. It is an\nopportunity to challenge the addict\u2019s thinking, getting to the root of a\nproblem that may in the past not have been given much thought.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">5) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Service to\nothers and giving back to society<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> is a corner stone of the 12-step programs.\nBeing not for profit institutes, and being almost entirely run by volunteer\ninvolvement, the 12 step programs only exist because recovering addicts put\ntheir time and energy into service to keep the doors to the meetings open.\nBeing of service to others and carrying a message to fellow addicts is what\nhelps keeps a person clean and sober. &nbsp;This is why recovering addicts are motivated\nto get involved in community work and other outreach programs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; line-height: 16.8pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Coming into a\nfellowship can be intimidating and confusing for someone who has never been\npart of a support group before. The recovery principles is based around the 12\nsteps and 12 step groups because it is such an effective way for a person to\nhave long term support in their recovery.
