You vent. Something else bad happens to or around you. You complain. Something else bad happens; you vent to one person, and later, when you find a new audience,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/jessica-stillman\/complaining-rewires-your-brain-for-negativity-science-says.html\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\">you complain<\/a>.<br><\/p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><div class=\"d-md-none mobile_insert mobile_insert_2\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Pretty soon you&#8217;re really good at complaining because while practice may not make perfect, it does make&nbsp;myelin, a microscopic neural substance that adds&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/jeff-haden\/if-you-say-yes-to-any-of-these-10-questions-science-says-you-definitely-learn-faster-than-average.html\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\">considerable speed and accuracy to thoughts&nbsp;and movement<\/a>. Myelin is kind of like a muscle,&nbsp;except instead of strengthening your&nbsp;body, it strengthens neural pathways related to a particular skill.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Problem is, your neural pathways aren&#8217;t equipped to&nbsp;make value judgments. Do something positive over and over again, and you&#8217;ll gain a useful skill and habit. Do something negative over and over again, and you&#8217;ll build a destructive&nbsp;skill and habit.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Either way, you&#8217;ve altered your brain.<\/p><\/div><div style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Neural networks are built on synapses,&nbsp;small gaps at the end of neurons that allow electrical or chemical&nbsp;signals to pass from one neuron to the next. That&#8217;s how nerve cells connect.&nbsp;Every time a charge is triggered, the synapses move microscopically closer together to decrease the distance and therefore&nbsp;the lag time. In really simple terms, think muscle memory.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">That adaptation helps&nbsp;build patterns of thought and behavior.&nbsp;The result is a virtuous cycle&nbsp;if you&#8217;re trying to learn&nbsp;a helpful new skill, and a vicious cycle if you regularly do something less positive.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"d-md-none mobile_insert mobile_insert_7\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Like complaining. Think of it as a bizarre version of the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3SMI4cF\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\" rel=\"noopener\">law of attraction<\/a>: Complaining will cause you&nbsp;to &#8220;attract&#8221; more experiences you can complain about (except in this case the phenomenon is based on science, not philosophy).<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Complain, and over time&nbsp;it&#8217;s easier to be negative than&nbsp;positive. Complain often enough, and for some complaining becomes a default behavior. Oh, they&#8217;ll say they&#8217;re perfectionists. Or they&#8217;ll say they have&nbsp;extremely high standards.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">But really,&nbsp;they&#8217;ve just learned to complain &#8212; and trained their neural pathways to be really good at complaining.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><h2 style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, Arial, &quot;Noto Sans&quot;, sans-serif, &quot;Apple Color Emoji&quot;, &quot;Segoe UI Emoji&quot;, &quot;Segoe UI Symbol&quot;, &quot;Noto Color Emoji&quot;; font-weight: 400; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);\">But What About Venting?<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">I know what you&#8217;re thinking: when you&#8217;re mad, upset, frustrated, etc., releasing those negative feelings helps you feel better.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Nope. Science says venting, whining, or complaining about a problem makes a bad situation worse. According to a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/1359432X.2016.1257610\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\" rel=\"noopener\">study published in<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology<\/em>,&nbsp;the more participants vented, the worse they felt their day had gone &#8212; and the longer those negative feelings last.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"d-md-none mobile_insert mobile_insert_13\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">As the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/digest.bps.org.uk\/2017\/03\/23\/workplace-venting-makes-it-harder-to-bounce-back-from-bad-experiences\/\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers write<\/a>:<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><blockquote style=\"border-left: 5px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 20px; overflow: hidden; padding-left: 1.5em; padding-right: 1.5em; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(51, 51, 51);\"><p style=\"font-style: normal !important;\">[Participants] not only reported lower momentary mood and less satisfaction and pride with the work they&#8217;d been doing that same day &#8230;&nbsp;but they also tended to experience lower mood the next morning &#8230;&nbsp;and lower pride in next-day accomplishments.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">And if that&#8217;s not enough, those feelings affect the people around you. Stanford research shows&nbsp;exposure to negativity peels back neurons in the hippocampus, the part of your&nbsp;brain used for problem-solving and cognitive function. And if Jim Rohn is right and we are&nbsp;the average of the five people we hang out with, if one or two of those people tend to complain a lot,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/high-octane-women\/201210\/emotions-are-contagious-choose-your-company-wisely\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\" rel=\"noopener\">research shows<\/a>&nbsp;their behaviors affect&nbsp;yours.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">Just as yours affects them.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">So what should you do instead of complaining? First, recognize that how you respond to anything isn&#8217;t predetermined. How you react is always a choice.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">If something bad happens to or around you, you get to choose how you&#8217;ll&nbsp;respond. If something goes wrong, you get to choose how you&#8217;ll respond. If someone does something you don&#8217;t like, you get to choose how you&#8217;ll respond.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"d-md-none mobile_insert mobile_insert_19\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">That&#8217;s an underlying premise of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/jeff-haden\/what-do-emotional-intelligent-ancient-romans-stoicism-have-in-common-nearly-everything.html\" style=\"color: rgb(30, 135, 240); cursor: pointer;\">Stoicism<\/a>: While you will never be able to control everything that happens, you can always control how you respond.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">The next time something goes wrong, don&#8217;t waste time complaining. Put that same effort into making the situation better. Talk &#8212; or better yet, think &#8212; about what you can change. Or&nbsp;what you&#8217;ll do&nbsp;next time.&nbsp;Or what you won&#8217;t do next time. Practice responding that way, and in time you&#8217;ll build up neural pathways that make responding that way even easier.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">In effect, staying positive, even in the face of adversity &#8212; will become a skill, one built through deliberate practice.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"standardText\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><p style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">But don&#8217;t stop there.
